Organic sourcing

Apple cider vinegar and fresh ginger are key ingredients; organic versions may offer better flavor and lower pesticide residues.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • to taste ice cubes

Method

  1. In a large pitcher, combine the water, apple cider vinegar, and maple syrup.
  2. Add the grated ginger and ground cinnamon, and stir well to mix the ingredients thoroughly.
  3. Pour the lemon juice into the mixture and stir again to blend everything together.
  4. Let the switchel rest for about 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  5. Strain the switchel into glasses filled with ice cubes before serving.
  6. Stir before serving, ensuring all ingredients are evenly distributed.

Notes

  • Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less maple syrup to taste.
  • Switchel can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Try adding seltzer water for a fizzy version.
