Organic sourcing
Apples are on the Dirty Dozen list due to pesticide residues—worth sourcing organic. Walnuts are a good organic option to avoid potential pesticide residues.
Ingredients
- 4 medium-sized apples, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
- 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
- 2 tbsp raisins
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup water
Method
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Core the apples, creating a cavity in the center, but leaving the bottom intact.
- In a small bowl, mix the walnuts, raisins, honey, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg.
- Fill each apple cavity with the walnut mixture, packing it tightly.
- Place the filled apples in a baking dish and pour water into the bottom of the dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, until the apples are tender.
- Let the apples cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For a nut-free option, use sunflower seeds instead of walnuts.
- These baked apples pair well with a scoop of coconut ice cream.
- Adjust honey quantity based on apple sweetness.
