Organic sourcing

Apples and almonds are worth sourcing organic; apples are on the Dirty Dozen for high pesticide residue, and almonds are often heavily sprayed during production.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 2 medium apples
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup milk (or plant-based milk)
  • 1/4 cup whole almonds
  • 2 tbsp raisins
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats and filtered water.
  2. Cover the bowl and let it soak in the refrigerator overnight.
  3. The next day, peel and grate the apples just before serving.
  4. Add the grated apples to the oat mixture.
  5. Stir in the plain yogurt, milk, and honey.
  6. Mix the lemon juice into the muesli for a fresh tang.
  7. Coarsely chop the almonds and add to the muesli, along with the raisins.
  8. Serve chilled or at room temperature, topping with extra almonds if desired.

Notes

  • For dairy-free muesli, use any plant-based yogurt and milk.
  • Bircher muesli pairs well with fresh berries for added sweetness.
