What it meansThe Swiss organic farmers' federation mark. The Knospe (Bud) is the dominant organic mark in Swiss supermarkets and operates to standards stricter than the Swiss federal organic ordinance.Denmark's national organic mark, owned by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. The red Ø is one of the most-trusted food labels in the world — recognised by ~98% of Danish consumers.Finland's national organic 'Sun Mark' (Aurinkomerkki). Operated by the Finnish Food Authority. In practice most Finnish organic packaging carries both Luomu and the EU Leaf — they certify to the same baseline.Sustainable-agriculture certification (post-2020 merged standard with UTZ). Covers environmental, social, and economic criteria. NOT an organic mark.

Guarantees
  • Whole-farm conversion.
  • Lower nitrogen inputs than the Swiss federal organic baseline.
  • Strong animal welfare requirements.
  • Annual on-site inspection.
  • EU baseline organic (EU 2018/848).
  • Annual on-site inspection by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.
  • Direct government control (not a private body) — the unusual Danish model that drives high consumer trust.
  • EU baseline organic (Finnish supply chains end-to-end).
  • Annual on-site inspection by the Finnish Food Authority.
  • Reduced (not eliminated) synthetic pesticide use, with bans on the most hazardous classes.
  • Forest conservation requirements (no deforestation after the cut-off date).
  • Worker welfare and community development requirements.
  • Annual third-party audit.
Does NOT
  • Switzerland is outside the EU — the Knospe is recognised by the EU under the Switzerland-EU equivalence agreement, but not by USDA without further certification.
  • Outside Denmark, retailers usually rely on the EU Leaf rather than the Ø.
  • The Sun Mark is awarded only to fully Finnish supply chains — imports use the EU Leaf alone.
  • Allows synthetic pesticides — does NOT meet any organic standard. Often confused with organic but it's a different programme.
