What it meansThe certification mark for biodynamic agriculture. Stricter than any government organic standard: it covers the entire farm as a closed ecosystem, follows a planting calendar tied to lunar/solar cycles, and bans many practices the baseline organic rules permit.Denmark's national organic mark, owned by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. The red Ø is one of the most-trusted food labels in the world — recognised by ~98% of Danish consumers.Mexico's national organic mark, administered by SENASICA under the Ley de Productos Orgánicos (LPO).A German farmers' association whose private organic standard is stricter than the EU baseline. Covers food, aquaculture, textiles, and cosmetics. Recognised globally.

Guarantees
  • All organic standards PLUS biodynamic preparations and whole-farm planning.
  • Whole-farm certification (not single fields/products).
  • Annual on-site inspection by Demeter-accredited inspectors.
  • Animal welfare standards stricter than baseline organic.
  • EU baseline organic (EU 2018/848).
  • Annual on-site inspection by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.
  • Direct government control (not a private body) — the unusual Danish model that drives high consumer trust.
  • ≥95% organic ingredients per LPO.
  • Annual on-site inspection by SENASICA-accredited certifier.
  • Stricter than EU 2018/848 (lower nitrogen inputs, full-farm conversion, social standards).
  • Annual on-site inspection.
  • Fair-pricing requirements for member farmers.
Does NOT
  • Biodynamic philosophy includes esoteric elements (lunar planting, herbal preparations) that many scientists view as non-evidence-based — the agronomic outcomes are still good, the underlying claims about cosmic forces are not testable.
  • Outside Denmark, retailers usually rely on the EU Leaf rather than the Ø.
  • USDA equivalence is granted product-by-product, not blanket.
  • Membership-based — only farms that join the Naturland association can use the mark.
