What it meansThe strictest, most widely-recognised standard for organic textiles. Covers the full supply chain from organic fibre to finished garment, with environmental AND social criteria.Finland's national organic 'Sun Mark' (Aurinkomerkki). Operated by the Finnish Food Authority. In practice most Finnish organic packaging carries both Luomu and the EU Leaf — they certify to the same baseline.Brazil's national organic mark under the Sistema Brasileiro de Avaliação da Conformidade Orgânica, administered by MAPA. Required on any food sold as 'orgânico' in Brazil. The certification mark for biodynamic agriculture. Stricter than any government organic standard: it covers the entire farm as a closed ecosystem, follows a planting calendar tied to lunar/solar cycles, and bans many practices the baseline organic rules permit.

Guarantees
  • ≥70% certified-organic natural fibre (the 'organic' grade requires ≥95%).
  • Restricted dyes, no chlorine bleach, no formaldehyde, no banned heavy metals.
  • Wastewater treatment requirements.
  • Social standards based on ILO core conventions (no child labour, no forced labour, fair wages, safe workplace).
  • Annual on-site inspection by IOAS-accredited certifier.
  • EU baseline organic (Finnish supply chains end-to-end).
  • Annual on-site inspection by the Finnish Food Authority.
  • ≥95% organic ingredients per Brazilian Organic Law 10.831/2003.
  • Annual on-site inspection by MAPA-accredited certifier OR a participatory-guarantee group (OPAC).
  • Two valid pathways: third-party certification OR a peer-reviewed OPAC system.
  • All organic standards PLUS biodynamic preparations and whole-farm planning.
  • Whole-farm certification (not single fields/products).
  • Annual on-site inspection by Demeter-accredited inspectors.
  • Animal welfare standards stricter than baseline organic.
Does NOT
  • Doesn't cover non-textile components (zips, buttons, prints) beyond the chemical-restriction list.
  • The Sun Mark is awarded only to fully Finnish supply chains — imports use the EU Leaf alone.
  • OPAC (peer-review) certified products are valid in Brazil but typically not accepted for export — exporters need third-party (e.g. IBD).
  • Biodynamic philosophy includes esoteric elements (lunar planting, herbal preparations) that many scientists view as non-evidence-based — the agronomic outcomes are still good, the underlying claims about cosmic forces are not testable.
