What it meansThe international umbrella body for the organic movement. Not a product label — IFOAM accredits other certifiers worldwide via the IFOAM Family of Standards. If a cert is 'IFOAM-accredited' it has been benchmarked to a globally consistent baseline.Brazil's national organic mark under the Sistema Brasileiro de Avaliação da Conformidade Orgânica, administered by MAPA. Required on any food sold as 'orgânico' in Brazil.Vottunarstofan Tún is Iceland's only accredited organic certifier. Accredited by MAST (Matvælastofnun) under the EU 2018/848-equivalent Icelandic standard, so a Tún-certified product is also recognised as EU-organic.

Guarantees
  • Accredited certifiers meet the IFOAM Norms and the IFOAM Family of Standards.
  • Independent peer review of certifier governance, inspection rigor, and conflict-of-interest controls.
  • ≥95% organic ingredients per Brazilian Organic Law 10.831/2003.
  • Annual on-site inspection by MAPA-accredited certifier OR a participatory-guarantee group (OPAC).
  • Two valid pathways: third-party certification OR a peer-reviewed OPAC system.
  • ≥95% organic ingredients per EU rules.
  • No synthetic pesticides, no GMOs.
  • Annual on-site inspection.
  • Animal welfare standards (outdoor / pasture access, geothermally-warmed greenhouse compatibility for vegetables).
Does NOT
  • Does NOT certify products directly — only certifiers. Look for the underlying national / private mark on the package.
  • OPAC (peer-review) certified products are valid in Brazil but typically not accepted for export — exporters need third-party (e.g. IBD).
  • There aren't many Tún-certified operations (~120–160) — coverage in the Icelandic market is narrower than in the EU mainland.
