What it meansThe East African regional organic mark, under the East Africa Organic Products Standard (EAOPS). Used across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi. Administered through Participatory Guarantee Systems coordinated by KOAN (Kenya Organic Agriculture Network).A German farmers' association whose private organic standard is stricter than the EU baseline. Covers food, aquaculture, textiles, and cosmetics. Recognised globally.Vottunarstofan Tún is Iceland's only accredited organic certifier. Accredited by MAST (Matvælastofnun) under the EU 2018/848-equivalent Icelandic standard, so a Tún-certified product is also recognised as EU-organic.North America's leading 'no genetically modified organisms' certification. Tests for the presence of GMOs in finished products. NOT organic.

Guarantees
  • Compliance with the East Africa Organic Products Standard (EAOPS).
  • Peer-review inspection via Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS).
  • Regional cross-recognition across the five East African Community member states.
  • Stricter than EU 2018/848 (lower nitrogen inputs, full-farm conversion, social standards).
  • Annual on-site inspection.
  • Fair-pricing requirements for member farmers.
  • ≥95% organic ingredients per EU rules.
  • No synthetic pesticides, no GMOs.
  • Annual on-site inspection.
  • Animal welfare standards (outdoor / pasture access, geothermally-warmed greenhouse compatibility for vegetables).
  • Verified absence of GMO ingredients (with action thresholds, not zero tolerance).
  • Annual third-party verification.
  • Tracing and segregation across the supply chain.
Does NOT
  • PGS-based — the inspection model is community peer-review rather than third-party. Strong for domestic markets, less recognised by the EU/USA than third-party schemes.
  • Membership-based — only farms that join the Naturland association can use the mark.
  • There aren't many Tún-certified operations (~120–160) — coverage in the Icelandic market is narrower than in the EU mainland.
  • Doesn't mean organic — Non-GMO products can use synthetic pesticides and fertilizers freely.
