What it meansThe official environmental label of the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland). Covers ~60 product categories from cleaning products to hotels — NOT specifically an organic standard. The federal Canadian organic standard, mandatory on any agricultural product sold across provincial borders or imported as 'organic'.Finland's national organic 'Sun Mark' (Aurinkomerkki). Operated by the Finnish Food Authority. In practice most Finnish organic packaging carries both Luomu and the EU Leaf — they certify to the same baseline.Argentina's national organic mark under SENASA (National Food Safety and Quality Service). Implemented as a label in December 2012 under Law 25.127 (1999).

Guarantees
  • Lifecycle-based environmental criteria for the product category.
  • Restrictions on hazardous chemicals.
  • Recyclability and packaging requirements.
  • Audited every 3-5 years against an updated standard.
  • ≥95% organic ingredients (single-ingredient products: 100%).
  • No synthetic pesticides, no GMOs, no irradiation.
  • Annual third-party certification under the Canada Organic Regime.
  • EU baseline organic (Finnish supply chains end-to-end).
  • Annual on-site inspection by the Finnish Food Authority.
  • Compliance with Argentine Law 25.127.
  • Annual on-site inspection by SENASA-accredited certifier.
  • Recognised as equivalent to EU + USDA organic under bilateral agreements.
Does NOT
  • Doesn't certify food as organic — Nordic Swan on a food package means lower-environmental-impact, not 'no synthetic pesticides'.
  • Provincial sales-only operations are not legally required to carry it (though many do voluntarily).
  • The Sun Mark is awarded only to fully Finnish supply chains — imports use the EU Leaf alone.
  • Domestic recognition only — exports use the buyer's national mark (USDA, EU Leaf) under equivalence.
