What it meansDenmark's national organic mark, owned by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. The red Ø is one of the most-trusted food labels in the world — recognised by ~98% of Danish consumers. The European Commission's voluntary environmental label. Covers cleaning products, paper, textiles, electronics, accommodation services. NOT an organic mark. The UK's largest organic certifier. Standards are stricter than the UK government's baseline (which still mirrors EU 2018/848 post-Brexit). Recognised by the EU and USA under equivalence.Norway's only accredited organic certifier. The Ø-merket is required on any food sold as 'økologisk' in Norway. Operates to EU 2018/848 equivalence plus Norwegian add-ons.

  • Direct government control (not a private body) — the unusual Danish model that drives high consumer trust.

  • Restrictions on hazardous chemicals.
  • Annual licence renewal with audit.
  • Stricter-than-baseline organic standards across food, textiles, cosmetics, and farming.
  • Annual on-site inspection.

  • EU baseline organic.
  • Annual on-site inspection.
  • Norwegian-specific welfare standards (esp. for cold-climate livestock).
Does NOT
  • Outside Denmark, retailers usually rely on the EU Leaf rather than the Ø.
  • Doesn't apply to food. Doesn't mean organic.
  • Logo is trademarked — not a free-licence mark.
  • Norway is outside the EU — the Ø is recognised under EEA equivalence, not direct EU equivalence.
