Setting up a nursery involves a specific, time-limited surge of purchases, crib, mattress, bedding, changing pad, rocker, toys, clothes, feeding supplies, diapers. Baby-related products are among the highest-leverage categories for organic investment: developing bodies, higher skin permeability, close contact with surfaces for extended periods. Here's a practical walk through the nursery with clear priorities. ## The Sleep Space Crib: Safety is the first priority. Under the US CPSC full-size crib rule (16 CFR 1219), slat spacing must be no greater than 2 3/8 inches (about 6 cm), drop-sides are prohibited, and construction must meet specified durability tests. Beyond safety: - Solid wood is preferable to MDF or particleboard

  • Water-based finishes (not polyurethane)
  • FSC-certified wood where possible Brands:
  • Stokke (solid wood, sustainable)
  • Oeuf (GREENGUARD Gold, Baltic birch construction)
  • Babyletto (GREENGUARD Gold certified)
  • Pottery Barn Kids organic (mainstream availability) Secondhand cribs are fine if they meet modern safety standards (check manufacturing date and recall status). A 10-year-old crib in good condition with a new mattress is often better environmentally than new. Crib mattress: This is where organic matters most in the nursery. Babies sleep roughly 12–17 hours a day (14–17 for newborns, dropping to 12–16 between 4 and 12 months per AAP/National Sleep Foundation consensus), and much of that time is spent in direct contact with this surface. Look for:
  • Organic cotton cover (GOTS certified)
  • Natural latex or organic wool fill
  • No added chemical flame retardants (wool provides natural flame retardancy)
  • GREENGUARD Gold certification for low VOC emissions
  • Waterproof cover that isn't PVC or vinyl Brands:
  • Naturepedic (organic certified, pediatrician-tested)
  • Avocado Green Baby
  • My Green Mattress
  • Ecobaby Organics Typical pricing: $200–$500 for a quality organic crib mattress. Worth the premium. Crib bedding: - Sheets: GOTS-certified organic cotton. 2–3 sets rotation.
  • Waterproof mattress cover: wool cover or natural waterproof fabric, not PVC
  • Blankets: Organic cotton or merino wool. (Note: no blankets in the crib for babies under 12 months, SIDS risk. Use sleep sacks instead.) Do NOT put pillows, bumpers, or soft toys in a baby's crib for the first year. This is non-negotiable for safe sleep. ## Changing Area Changing pad: Spends a lot of time in contact with baby skin, often soiled. - Organic cotton cover with waterproof backing
  • Natural latex or wool fill
  • Avoid PVC vinyl covers (phthalates) Brands:
  • Naturepedic changing pads
  • Oilo (various certifications) Changing pad covers: Keep 3–4 on rotation. GOTS organic cotton. Wash hot. Diaper disposal: - Diaper genies use plastic film (often scented), get refills without added fragrance
  • Or use a simple lidded pail with a laundry bag liner that can be washed Diaper cream: Choose COSMOS or NATRUE certified organic:
  • Zinc oxide as primary active
  • Organic oils (calendula, coconut)
  • No fragrance Brands: Weleda, Earth Mama, Burt's Bees Baby, Little Butterfly. ## Bathing Baby bathtub: Any sturdy option works. Avoid PVC. Soap and shampoo: For infants, plain water is usually sufficient for several months. When needed:
  • COSMOS or NATRUE certified
  • Fragrance-free (or very mildly fragranced)
  • Minimal ingredients Brands: Weleda Baby, Burt's Bees Baby, Lavera Baby. Baby lotion:
  • Plain organic oils (coconut, sweet almond, calendula) work well
  • For eczema-prone skin: Weleda Calendula Baby Cream, California Baby
  • Avoid mineral oil, petrolatum, synthetic fragrance Towels: GOTS organic cotton for body contact. Hooded baby towels are practical. ## Feeding Bottles:
  • Glass with silicone sleeves (best: no chemicals, easy to sterilize)
  • Stainless steel (lightweight, unbreakable)
  • BPA/BPS/phthalate-free plastic (third choice) Brands: Lifefactory, Mason Bottle (reuses canning jars), Pura Stainless. Bottle nipples: Natural rubber or medical-grade silicone. Not PVC. Breast milk storage: Glass or BPA-free plastic containers. Bags can contain microplastics, glass is better if practical. High chair and bibs:
  • Wood or stainless steel high chair frames are best
  • Silicone bibs are washable and long-lasting
  • Avoid PVC-based vinyl bibs Solid food introduction:
  • Glass jars or stainless steel pouches rather than plastic pouches
  • Wooden or bamboo baby spoons
  • Silicone feeding plates (attach to table) ## Clothing All baby clothing priority: GOTS-certified organic cotton. Why it matters more for babies:
  • Developing skin is more permeable
  • Babies put sleeves, bibs, blankets in their mouths
  • Formaldehyde in conventional wrinkle treatments can cause contact dermatitis
  • Clothing fits close to skin for extended periods Brands:
  • Frugi (UK, GOTS, durable)
  • Hanna Andersson (some organic lines)
  • Mori (bamboo-based, GOTS)
  • Pact Baby
  • Burt's Bees Baby
  • Little Spruce Organics Budget strategy:
  • Secondhand organic is the ideal: GOTS-certified cotton doesn't lose its organic status. Used baby clothing in good condition is cheap.
  • Mix new GOTS essentials (things that touch skin most, base layers, pajamas, bibs) with secondhand for outerwear and less critical items
  • Buy ahead of size when possible, pre-wash to assess shrinkage Avoid for conventional baby sleepwear: Flame retardant concerns. Look specifically for "tight-fitting" cotton sleepwear that doesn't require chemical flame retardants. ## Toys Infant toys (0–12 months):
  • Natural rubber: Sophie la Girafe (the original), plantoys teethers
  • Untreated wood with beeswax or plant oil finish
  • Organic cotton stuffed animals
  • Silicone teethers (medical grade) Avoid:
  • Vinyl/PVC plastic toys (phthalates)
  • Painted wooden toys with unknown paint sources
  • Secondhand painted toys from before 2010 (lead paint risk) Toddler toys (12+ months):
  • Wooden puzzles (water-based paint)
  • Natural rubber balls
  • Organic cotton dolls
  • Stacking cups and blocks in wood or non-toxic silicone Brands:
  • Ostheimer (wooden animals and figures)
  • Grimm's (rainbow stackers, wooden toys)
  • Plan Toys (FSC wood, non-toxic paint)
  • Bajo (wooden toys)
  • Holztiger (wooden animals) ## Pharmacy For baby medicines and first aid, conventional is often necessary, pediatrician-recommended infant Tylenol, etc. Don't force organic in medical situations. When choices exist (infant vitamins, saline sprays, diaper rash creams), organic options are usually available. ## The Budget Reality A fully organic nursery new-build is expensive, easily $3,000–$6,000 for mattress, bedding, clothing, furniture, and accessories from scratch. Strategies to manage cost: 1. Secondhand everything non-critical: clothing, furniture, toys
  1. Prioritize sleep: mattress and crib bedding are the highest-impact new purchases
  2. Accept hand-me-downs from friends and family with children, if it's washed, it's fine
  3. Register specifically for organic items so gift-givers direct dollars where it matters
  4. Minimum viable list: You need fewer things than the marketing suggests. Babies don't know the difference between a curated organic nursery and a functional one with the key items organic. ## The Priority List From highest impact to lowest: 1. Crib mattress (most hours of daily contact)
  5. Base layer clothing and pajamas (close skin contact)
  6. Crib sheets and mattress cover
  7. Feeding supplies that touch food (bottles, solid-food utensils)
  8. Diaper cream and bath products
  9. Toys that go in mouth
  10. Outerwear and less skin-contact clothing
  11. Furniture (high cost, moderate impact if already low-VOC certified)
  12. Decor and accessories The first four items cover perhaps 70% of the practical organic benefit for the baby. The remaining items add incremental improvement. A baby doesn't need everything organic. A baby needs good sleep, good food, and warm arms. The right upgrades in the right places make the nursery cleaner without making parenting more complicated than it already is.
